Japan hiked its consumption tax rate to 10% from 8% as the government attempts to cover the ever-growing cost of supporting the country’s ageing population.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

According to ANN News<\/a> on October 10, 2019,\u00a0 in response to the changing customers’ lifestyles and the growing demand for takeouts, the government introduced the reduced tax rate (8 per cent)\u00a0 for take-away food. The confusion between eat-in and take-out food tax rate led to the increasing cases of “eat-in tax evasion” in Japan.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

For examples, some convenience stores have introduced self-checkout systems, which allow customers to choose if they are eating-in or not, to calculate the tax rate correspondingly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
